Traffic Court Records in Sawyer County
Sawyer County sends traffic matters down more than one road. Wisconsin Circuit Court statistics split them three ways: criminal traffic, contested forfeitures, and uncontested forfeitures. A Hayward parking citation may start with the City Clerk and Police Department. Ordinance cases with no municipal court to hear them land in Sawyer County Circuit Court. So the issuing agency, citation number, and case type decide your path.
For a Circuit Court case, search Wisconsin Circuit Court Access. Most people call it WCCA or CCAP. It shows public case information and the full event history. The actual court file sits with the Sawyer County Clerk of Circuit Court. That office can supply permitted copies. Remember that a city citation may never appear there. An empty WCCA search does not prove a parking matter never existed.
Three Sawyer Citation Paths
The label "traffic court" covers three different things. Criminal traffic is just that, a criminal case. A traffic forfeiture runs through the civil-forfeiture process instead. That is true whether or not anyone contests it. Hayward parking citations follow the city's own payment and contest rules. Hang onto the exact agency and the code or statute listed on the citation.
| Matter | First Record Holder | Likely Search |
|---|---|---|
| Criminal traffic | Sawyer County Clerk of Circuit Court | WCCA by county and case category |
| Traffic forfeiture | Circuit Clerk when filed in court | WCCA, citation, or clerk inquiry |
| Hayward parking | City Clerk or Police before contest | Citation and city office records |
| Local ordinance | Issuing municipality, then assigned court | Agency first, WCCA if filed in Circuit Court |
How to Look Up a Traffic Ticket
Read the citation first. Write down the agency, citation number, alleged violation, place, and any appearance instructions. For a state Circuit Court matter, open WCCA and pick Sawyer County. Search by citation number or case number if you have one. Advanced filters cover case type, date range, status, prosecuting attorney, or issuing agency. Then read the whole case-history list, not just the result row.
If WCCA comes up empty, call the Sawyer County Clerk at 715-634-4887. The courthouse counter and a public WCCA terminal are there for walk-ins. Copies can be requested by mail at 10610 Main Street, Suite 74, Hayward, WI 54843. A precise county public-record request also works. For Hayward parking, call Police at 715-634-8961 to contest. Or call City Hall at 715-634-2311 for routing. The city and county offer no separate Hayward docket portal, drop box, or bulk traffic export.
| Search Field | Use | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Citation number | Targets the issued ticket | Copy every letter and digit exactly |
| Case number | Targets a filed court matter | Use the format shown in WCCA or court papers |
| Issuing agency | Separates city, county, and state routes | Do not assume all agencies file the same way |
| Case category | Separates criminal traffic and forfeiture | Search another fitting category if the first is blank |
| Date and status | Narrows common names and broad results | Check every results page and event entry |
Sawyer Municipal Court Boundary
Wisconsin municipal courts are creations of a city, village, or town. Their dockets can include ordinance, parking, traffic, first-offense OWI, underage-alcohol, building-code, and animal-control matters. They are not branches of Sawyer County Circuit Court. Their records also stay out of WCCA automatically. The Wisconsin Court System municipal-court overview lays out that separate structure.

Hayward has no municipal court of its own. The state's 2021 interim directory lists no municipal court for Hayward or Sawyer County. The city publishes no separate court page today. Treat that as a routing clue rather than a promise about the future. Current Hayward contact information sends court questions to the Sawyer County Clerk. Before you file, pay, or appear, confirm the assigned court straight from the citation.
Finding Your Traffic Court Date
Your citation or notice should carry the first response or appearance details. A filed Sawyer County case will also show hearing events in WCCA. Open the full case view. Check the date, setting type, branch, and status against your most recent court notice. A mailed Notice of Hearing controls the remote join details. The county's remote instructions are not a calendar search tool. Papers and online history disagreeing? Call the clerk.
| Citation Number | The ticket identifier, entered exactly as printed |
|---|---|
| Case Number | The court locator shown as YYYY-XX-##### in the general Wisconsin pattern |
| Court | The city process, Sawyer County Circuit Court branch, or other named forum |
| Date and Time | The response, appearance, hearing, or trial setting on the latest notice |
| Setting Type | Initial appearance, trial, motion, or another event named in the record |
| Status | Pending, reopened, disposed, or another court-coded case state |
Want a remote appearance? Sawyer County has you call the Judicial Assistant at 715-634-4886 at least 24 hours before the hearing, emergencies aside. A remote link on an older notice does not mean the date still stands.
Hayward Parking Record Route
Hayward's parking process is spelled out in unusual detail. The original citation is $25. Pay by mail. Or pay at the City Clerk counter, 15889 West Third Street, during published city hours. Miss the deadline and the city adds a $10 late fee after 15 days. At 30 days, the city notifies Wisconsin DMV. It can suspend or refuse registration until the citation and fees are paid.
To fight it, call Hayward Police at 715-634-8961 and ask for a court date. Hayward assigns that date through the Sawyer County Clerk of Courts. Court costs can be tacked on after a finding of guilt. The payment file and the later Circuit Court record may connect. They are not the same record. The City of Hayward ordinance page names the local code behind many city matters.

Parking, zoning, and other ordinance citations do not all follow the same steps. Keep the chapter, citation number, and issuing office handy with any records request.
Paying or Contesting a Ticket
Start with what the citation or the most recent court notice says. The deadline and your options are printed right there. Paying closes the ticket through the route stated on the notice. Contesting asks the court to review it. That may create a hearing record. Sawyer County accepts court costs online, by mail, or in person. Phone payment is not offered. Keep this separate from Hayward's parking-payment process, which runs on its own track.
| Paying | Contesting |
|---|---|
| Use the court or city payment route named on the citation. | Contact the issuing office or court by the stated response date. |
| Keep the receipt and citation number as proof of the transaction. | Save the assigned case number, hearing date, and latest notice. |
| Hayward parking accepts mail or City Clerk counter payment. | Hayward parking contests start by calling the Police Department. |
Do not miss the response date: added fees or other enforcement may follow, and the official court or city office must explain how to cure the default.
Reopening a Sawyer Traffic Case
Need a traffic case reopened in Sawyer County? Wisconsin form TR-310 is the motion the county publishes for that purpose. You will list the state and county, the parties, the case number, any prior trial or initial-appearance setting and its date, why the event was missed, what reopening you want, who gets served, plus your printed name, signature, and date. Filing the motion asks the court to act. It does not reopen anything on its own. The local Circuit Court page lists a $50 motion-to-reopen fee for traffic and forfeiture matters. File the completed form with the fee as the clerk directs, then watch the docket for the court's order. Clerk staff can walk you through filing mechanics. They cannot pick your reason, predict the ruling, or give legal advice.
Court Traffic Record vs Driver Record
Two offices hold two different files. The Sawyer County court record covers what happened after the citation reached the court: case events, settings, the plea, disposition, and court financial entries. Wisconsin's licensing agency keeps the driver record instead. Want a filed order or a certified disposition? That request goes to the Sawyer County Clerk, not the licensing office.
| Court Traffic Record | Driver Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Custodian | Sawyer County Clerk of Circuit Court | Wisconsin licensing agency |
| Shows | Citation case, court events, plea, disposition, and court amount | Licensing data reported under state rules |
| Access | WCCA public information or clerk request | State licensing record-request process |
The line between them is thin but matters. WCCA serves the court case. Ordering the separate state file takes a different route.
Fees and Copies
Viewing a public Sawyer County traffic case on WCCA costs nothing. Copies are another matter. A filed document, a certified disposition, or a complete permitted record has to come from the clerk. The county's 2026 public-record schedule sets the prices: paper copies at $0.25 per page, staff time at $2.06 per five minutes when it applies, and actual postage. No universal certification fee appears on that schedule. Ask the clerk before you send payment.
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WCCA case information | Free | Public index and event information, not a full file |
| Standard paper copy | $0.25 per page | Other production charges may apply |
| Staff time | $2.06 per five minutes | May apply to larger location or review work |
| Postage | Actual cost | Confirm the total before mailing payment |
| Traffic reopening motion | $50 | Local notice for traffic or forfeiture reopening |
| Certified court copy | Confirm with clerk | State the exact document and delivery method |
Mail requests go to one office. That is the Sawyer County Clerk of Circuit Court, 10610 Main Street, Suite 74, Hayward, WI 54843. Include the case number, the exact record you want, and the copy type. Add your contact details. A city citation may never have reached Circuit Court. In that case, skip the county clerk and ask the City Clerk, the Police Department, or whichever office issued it instead.
When Sawyer Search Is Blank
A blank WCCA result has several possible causes. The citation may have stayed with a city. The wrong case category may be selected, or the number may sit in the wrong field. The case may simply not be publicly displayed. Search by Sawyer County plus the citation or case number first. Then try the fitting traffic or forfeiture category with a date range. Check every result page. Still nothing? Call the issuing agency and ask whether the matter went to Sawyer County Circuit Court. Get the court case number if one exists. For a public copy, send a narrow request to whichever office actually holds the record. Treat no result as a court disposition only after the source office confirms it.
Sawyer Ordinance Record Fields
A name-only court search can miss things a local ordinance request needs. Write down the municipality and the issuing department. Add the citation number, the ordinance chapter, the issue date, and the response deadline. Note the payment state and whether a court date was requested. Those details let Hayward staff tell a parking file from a zoning or other code matter. Did the city assign the case to Sawyer County Circuit Court? Add the Circuit Court case number and ask the clerk for the court event history. Keep city receipts and court papers separate. They document two steps in the route and may sit with two different offices.
